BAM DEBUT
Welcome to BAM!
We are excited you have joined us for our incredible fall offerings, which span theater, music, opera, literary events, visual art exhibitions, community gatherings for adults and families, dynamic virtual programming, and more.

Everyone at BAM was honored to be able to contribute to the cultural landscape over the last 18 months, and we will continue to create new art and community experiences as part of New York City’s revival. We are grateful to everyone who worked tirelessly to make this season possible, from our endlessly creative artists and staff to our elected officials and civic representatives, to our committed audiences, and to all of the frontline workers who kept (and keep) the city running, despite countless challenges.

You—our amazing audience and community—make all of this possible. Your steadfast support inspires us daily. As we forge a path forward through these unprecedented times, we are honored to reflect, evolve, adapt, and flourish together with you.

Thank you for making BAM a part of your life, and we cannot wait to see you again soon!

Sincerely,
Nora Ann Wallace, BAM Board Chair

Welcome from the Artistic Director
Hello!

With our doors wide open once again, BAM’s fall season brings some of the most singular artists on the planet to New York, inviting us to rediscover the extraordinary transformations that can take place inside a theater. I am elated to share these incredible performances with you.

Following our exciting season openers, the stunning, Golden Lion-winning Sun & Sea and Japanese sound artist ASUNA’s acclaimed 100 Keyboards, we are thrilled to present By Heart. This thought-provoking work of visionary Portuguese artist Tiago Rodrigues, newly appointed director of the Avignon Festival, illuminates the places that forbidden texts have found in our minds and hearts throughout history.

What we have waited for most is your arrival. The shared experience of live performance is unlike anything else in the world, and each of these pieces strike a resonant chord of what performance can be when communities come together.

Thank you for joining us as these international artists unleash their imagination, and as we look ahead to a full year of adventurous art across our stages and cinemas.

Whether you’ve come to reflect, reunite, or rejoice...we’re so happy to see you.

Welcome, settle in, and enjoy,
David Binder
BAM Artistic Director
About By Heart
By Heart is a piece about the importance of transmission, of the invisible smuggling of words and ideas that only keeping a text in your memory can provide. It’s about a theater that recognizes itself as that place of transmission of what you can’t measure in meters, euros, or bytes. It is about the safe hiding-place that forbidden texts have always found in our brains and our hearts, as a guarantee of civilization even in the most barbaric and desolate times. As George Steiner himself would put it in an interview on the TV program, Of Beauty and Consolation: “Once 10 people know a poem by heart, there’s nothing the KGB, the CIA, or the Gestapo can do about it. It will survive”. But, bottom line, By Heart is a training program for the resistance that only comes to an end when the 10 new soldiers know a poem by heart.
Artist's Note
Interior Decoration

““The last thing to leave our dying lips may very well be a poem.” This is what essayist Joseph Brodsky wrote. Either this or something quite similar. I’m quoting from memory. Brodsky claims that the poem is born as a device to help us apprehend the world, simplifying the task of apprehending it. So rather than an end in itself, the poem would be a means or a tool to reach the goal of knowing a world by heart. Poetry would thus be the art of creating mnemonics.

“As though it were aware of the fragility and treachery of man’s faculties, the poem aims at the target of human memory, because memory is usually the last thing to disappear, even when our whole existence crumbles around us, as if we were trying to keep a memory of the disappearance itself.” Again, I quote Joseph Brodsky by heart. And I know what he’s talking about when he claims that our physiology is helpless against the poetic invasion. Because of my work as an actor, some texts have got inside me, they have settled in and never left me since. They are discreet tenants who dwell in my memory, although they can be awakened at any time.

It is precisely because I am the proud landlord to all of these tenants of memory that I
embarked on a journey when my grandmother, who is from Trás-os-Montes, was growing blind and asked me to choose a book for her to learn by heart, so she could read it in her mind after she stopped seeing. This literary and labyrinthian journey is still happening. While I was searching for the ultimate book for my grandmother to keep in her memory, I created a show called By Heart, where I teach a Shakespeare sonnet to ten members of the audience who volunteer to come on stage.

In this show, I tell stories related to my grandmother, to Boris Pasternak, or to Ray Bradbury. I quote literature professor George Steiner, who refers to the texts we keep in our memory as “the decoration for the house of our interior”, perhaps ignorant of the fact that in Portuguese, “decorating” is a synonym of “learning by heart” (although I find it hard to believe that Steiner doesn’t know everything). This play is essentially the portrayal of a search for the ultimate book, the only one that my grandmother would keep inside her head once her eyes failed her.

During the show I also recall the story of Nadezhda, Osip Mandelstam’s wife. When the
Russian poet was arrested and his books confiscated, she started teaching a poem to ten people at a time, in her kitchen. So that her husband would continue to be published in people’s memories. And that is what I try to do. I teach William Shakespeare’s sonnet 30 to ten audience members at each performance. One of the sonnets from the book that I chose for my grandmother to learn by heart.

Although I have already accomplished the mission of choosing her last book, my journey continues, for such are the ways of memory. For a year now, I have been presenting this show in Portugal, Spain, France, USA and Canada. I will continue in Germany, Switzerland, Norway, etc. A couple of hundred spectators have already learned this sonnet by my side, on stage, in several languages, and I hesitate to believe that, even when the play’s tour is over, this journey will ever be over. Because I know that it is a journey in search of what might be my grandmother’s last words. And perhaps even my own last words. This is how sonnet 30 starts: “When to the sessions of sweet silent thought / I summon up remembrance of things past.”

—Tiago Rodrigues

ON By Heart

A crowd looks up at an elephant on top of an icy mountain. The elephant is the biggest animal to walk the surface of the Earth. Yet this one must be a hundred times bigger than a regular elephant. This was the picture that Tiago Rodrigues chose to illustrate the project for his work By Heart, a few months before its premiere.

Faced with the oddness of it, the audience will wonder. What is an elephant doing on top of an icy mountain? How did it get there? Or even: but this elephant has an unfathomable scale, for at this distance it should only be a dot in the horizon. How is this possible?

Faced with this phenomenon, opinions differ, and each person will have something to tell, a memory of what they have witnessed, where everyone is confronted with the oddness. Each person will retain their own individual version of the event.

Confronted with what amazes and moves us, we will inevitably tell other people what we felt, and in the course of this transmission we will add our own emotion and change a few details. Memory is chameleonic and adopts the color of its transmitter. We face two phenomena: perception and transmission. In the gap between the two, the possibility for poetics emerges. George Steiner says, “When a language dies, a way of looking at the world dies too.” He also tells us that the era of books is coming to an end. When Tiago Rodrigues brings together 10 audience members and asks them to learn a Shakespeare sonnet by heart, he is asking them to learn it with their hearts, he is offering the possibility of poetics allied to the experience of poetry. He inevitably fulfils the role of a librarian for the ephemeral. If each person memorizes that sonnet, it will survive forever, virally. Hence the symbolic role of books in this work. Formally, this is the simplest show that Tiago Rodrigues has ever created. Conceptually, it is probably his most complex work.

Going back to the photomontage of the elephant and the crowd, there is something else that surprises us. Saturated colors, ektachrome film from the fifties and old-fashioned clothes, their bodies paradoxically relaxed in an almost bucolic atmosphere of contemplation, people from different generations united in the experience of looking, translating the archaic and profoundly civilizational aspect that books summon. I don’t know if this was the audience that the director had imagined, but it was certainly close to the one he found in the try-out performances of the work: a sample of people from the community, a particularly heterogeneous audience, who were asked to learn a Shakespeare poem, on stage, in front of the other audience members, something that would be a huge challenge even for an experienced actor/actress. “When to the sessions of sweet silent thought / I summon up remembrance of things past...” At this point, the audience is transgressing several rituals of theatrical convention, and militantly taking on the role of guardian of words and ideas. Without as much as laying a finger on theater’s delicate place as a space of memory, the shift in positions from spectator to actor/director happens without us asking questions about the change. The sharing now occurs among the audience members, and the actor/director takes on the role of mediator. By Heart questions the role of the audience, and holds it accountable for the theatrical experience. The time journey that takes place throughout the show is thus one of accountability. The same journey that Tiago’s grandmother decides to undertake when she perseveres in memorizing a whole book before the inevitably approaching blindness (in the play, but also in real life).

This act of perseverance is the contract that theater enters into each night, a contract between actors and spectators. The contract of memory, the final frontier of live art, much hated by the Establishment, as you cannot sell, buy, measure, or tax it; it transfers onto each spectator the accountability for something that was relevant but ephemeral.

Who's Who
ARTIST

Tiago Rodrigues

Since he started as an actor 20 years ago, Tiago Rodrigues has always looked at the theater as a human assembly: a place where people meet, like in a cafe, to confront their thoughts and share their time. His encounter with tg STAN (an acronym for Stop Thinking About Names, a theater collective consisting of Jolente De Keersmaeker, Damiaan De Schrijver and Frank Vercruyssen), in 1997, when he was still a student, definitely confirmed his attachment to the absence of hierarchy in a creative group. The freedom he found when he first started working with this Belgian collective would forever influence his future works.

In 2003, he co-founded with Magda Bizarro the company Mundo Perfeito, with which he created and presented about 30 performances in more than 20 countries, becoming a regular presence in events such as Festival d’Automne à Paris, METEOR Festival in Norway, Theaterformen in Germany, Festival TransAmériques in Canada, kunstenfestivalsdesarts in Belgium, among others. He collaborated with a large number of Portuguese and international theater artists, as well as choreographers and dancers. He also taught theatre in several schools, namely the Belgian dance school PARTS, directed by choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, the Swiss performing arts school Manufacture, and the international project École des Maîtres. Parallel to his theater work, he wrote screenplays for film and television, articles for newspapers, poetry, and essays.

His latest performances granted him international recognition and a number of national and international awards. Some of his most notable works are By Heart, Antony and Cleopatra, Bovary, The way she dies, and Sopro, created at the Festival d’Avignon in 2017. Other recent works include Please Please Please, co-created with the choreographers Mathilde Monnier and La Ribot, and Catarina and the beauty of killing fascists.

Either mixing true stories and fiction, rewriting classics or adapting novels, the theater of Tiago Rodrigues is deeply rooted in the idea of writing for and with the actors, searching for a poetical transformation of reality through theatrical tools. That desire is obvious in projects such as Occupation Bastille, an artistic occupation of Théâtre de la Bastille, in Paris, by almost a hundred artists and spectators in 2016. In 2018 he was awarded XV Europe Prize Theatrical Realities. In the following year, he was distinguished by the French Republc with the title Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) and received the Prémio Pessoa 2019 (Pessoa Prize), an annual award and one of the most important distinctions in Portugal for the areas of culture and science. Director of the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II in Lisbon since 2015, he will become director of the world-renowned Festival d’Avignon in September of 2022. Tiago Rodrigues has become a builder of bridges between cities and countries, at once host and advocate of a living theater.
